The albatross

i don't think you can decide weather it was a bad thing to kill the albatross because the text dosnt give any reasons why he shot in the first place. but i believe that it was wrong because of all the suffering that the marina went through. Also in the time when the ancient marina was written it was wildly considered to be bad so when the mariner shot the albatross he was risking the life's of all the crew and he knew it. but we don't know if the crew egged him on and the line “‘Twas right, said they, such birds to slay, that bring the fog and mist.”
i think killing the albatross was bad but i don't think we have enough information to say whether what the marina did was wrong.

Lara Patterson

'Why do we love the sea? It is because it has some potent power to make us think things we like to think. ~Robert Henri'

This quote means ,to me, that people when at the sea are relaxed or comfortable. I think that when people are at the sea they think about their life or issues that they face currently. People are also drawn to the sea if they are sad, or emotional and when people go to the sea they will be relaxed and become happy while thinking happy thoughts.

‘For whatever we lose (like a you or a me),
It’s always our self we find in the sea.’
~e.e. cummings

I think this quote is very meaningful and well phrased.
It tells us that as we go through life, we sometimes loose things that are special to us. Though some may give up hope, others will go on. When I think of something as powerful and calm as the sea, I feel peaceful and free. This quote tells me that as we look out at the sea we each interpret differently the strength, power and vulnerability that we feel. It gives us a chance to think and to find who we truly are and where we belong.

I believe it was bad for the mariner to kill this ancient magical bird, the albatross.
In the story of The Ancient Mariner the mariner not only inflicted bad luck onto himself but also on his superstitious crew, his actions resulting in their death.
Though with the absence of this great bird the wind did blow a gale “That made the breeze to blow!”, the mariner was left isolated to suffer this everlasting torture, as if like a slave he sailed through the fog and mist answering every order made by the curse. ‘Alone, alone, all, all alone, Alone on a wide wide sea! And never a saint took pity on, My soul in agony.’
I still do not understand the intentions behind the mariners actions, as he was fully aware that whoever slayed the albatross would be bestowed with bad luck.
The mariner was left to suffer, and still to this day he wears the bad luck around his neck, telling his grueling story to all who will listen.

Praise the sea; on shore remain. ~John Florio

I think that this quote means that people should repect the sea and never underestimate its sheer power of destruction. It also says to me that you should never turn your back to the sea as it is an unpredictable force of nature. All in all this quote says that if you stay on shore you will never be in danger from the sea.

The sailors tell the mariner it is a bad thing that he killed the albatross, “Ah wretch! said they, the bird to slay,/ that made the breeze to blow!” but also that it was a good thing, “‘Twas right, said they, such birds to slay,/ that bring the fog and mist.” Using the information in the two articles you have read, do you think it was a good thing or a bad thing for the mariner to kill the albatross? Write your comment in a structured paragraph.

Killing the albatross resulted in good and bad things for the ancient mariner. The good thing about the mariner slaying the albatross was that it stopped the fog and mist on their journey. But the bad things overwhelmed the good things immensly. For one thing the albatross brought a big storm to where the mariner was sailing and also the albatross made all of the crew of the mariners ship parched and that resulted in the death of all of the crew members except for the ancient mariner.

Consequently for the reasons above I think that the slaying of the albatross was a very bad thing to do and it resulted in very bad luck for the mariner and his crew.

"I hate to be near the sea, and to hear it raging and roaring like a wild beast in its den. It puts me in mind of the everlasting efforts of the human mind, struggling to be free and ending just where it began." ~William Hazlitt

This quote suggests that Hazlitt doesn't like to be near the sea because it reminds him of the constant struggle of the mind to be free.

People try to clear (free) their minds but as soon as they have something always comes into their mind, ending up just where they started. The mind is like the sea because it is constantly turning over thought and ideas. It also suggests the water cycle because water gets evaporated then falls as rain and flows back into the sea via rivers and creeks, ending back where it started.
I think "like a wild beast in its den" means our mind is trapped in our head unable to be free.

"The sea has never been friendly to man. At most it has been the accomplice of human restlessness." ~Joseph Conrad

To me this quote is atrue statement of the personality of the sea.
The sea has never been friendly to man, always cruel and unpredictable. It is to me "the accomplice of human restlessness."

I think the quote "Praise the sea; on shore remain." ~John Florio
mmeans that we should respect the ocean, its beauty and power and wonders it holds, however that it can also be a dangerous place and that we should remain on shore and view it from there away from harm that it can cause like storms and rough seas.

I think it was bad to kill an albatross.

Sailor used to believe that the albatross had magical powers and that the albatross was a soul of someone who has died.

It was also believed by sailors to be bad luck to kill an albatross.

Killing an albatross never resulted in good luck as the ancient mariner discovered.

therefore killing analbatross couldn't result in good luck
