Oxley College 2013 - A Day in the Life…

Category: Activity

What are the most powerful learning technologies available today?  How might they change — or what might be invented — in the next 5 years?  What should Oxley College do to plan ahead to take advantage technologies that can supercharge student learning?

Perhaps the best way is to ask keen technology users (You!) to describe a day in the life of a well-connected and digitally enhanced student as he or she moves through a day at Oxley College…

Once upon a time, five years in the future…

(consider classroom and library activities, assembly, tutor groups, online activities, worldwide collaborations, software you might use, resources, personal devices like iPhones & laptops, sport, etc.)

You can add your story either as a comment to this post or log-in and create your own post.

Tech Team - Client Services

Category: Uncategorized

Hi fellow techies,

Because you are all so good with the skills you have, I’d like us to focus on some real work. There are a lot of opportunities right here at Oxley College to begin developing your career portfolio. The best place to start is with your interests, but to serve the needs of real clients, we have to see if we can provide (or gain!) the skills and abilities they need. To get started on this, please copy and paste the following template into your personal page on this Blog and fill it in for yourself. Feel free to make links, add images / movies / flash files, etc. These will give our prospective clients a better idea of what you’d like to provide.

My Main Areas of Interest

  • List interest one (provide a link?)
  • List interest two (provide a link?)
  • etc.

Projects that I have already Developed

Describe or link to projects that you have already completed. If you haven’t completed a project (movie, Web site, script, animation, etc.), let’s get on it and make sure you have one by the end of this term.

Projects that I’d like to Develop

Describe in a few sentences what you’d like to do, then show an online example of it. Think about things like:

  • Tutorials (teachers could use these with their students making tech projects)
  • Videos
  • Online exhibits
  • Complete Web sites for P & F group
  • etc.

Recent News on White Hat Hacking

Category: Whitehat hacking

Here’s some recent articles related to both Microsoft’s policy on hackers and an earlier case in California. The most telling remarks is perhaps:

“I think the bottom line is that anybody that does disclosures of security vulnerabilities has to be very careful (so as to) not be accused of being a hacker,” Tien said. “The computer trespass laws are very, very tricky.” from “Breach Case Could Curtail Web Flaw Finders” in the Register.

The more recent article, entitled “Microsoft: Finding flaws on our website is OK” tells a different story, but as the referred to in the article, the area is still uncertain and this claim by one spokesperson runs counter to past behaviour.

Intro to HTML

Category: Activity

HTML - HyperText Markup Language is what made the World Wide Web possible. Sir Tim Berners-Lee came up with the idea of a common formatting language so that basic documents could be read and shared across platforms. The pieces of HTML are called “Tags.” Let’s learn a few of them because even though you won’t need them very often, I find that understanding the basics of HTML is always handy.

Follow along with me, but we’ll use a variation on this page I made somewhere around the time you were born…

Here are some good links:

This is a cool video that shows a little about the power of HyperText and the Web.

A video we made last year

Category: ideas

Last year over a few lunch periods we thought up and filmed this video.  Emerson did the music and Mr. March did the editing.  Starring a celebrity cast!
