Music – May 1

present: SWR, RHU, TM

Issues

The response from Year 7 students regarding the online listening task was positive although some who are not on broadband experienced bandwidth constraints for the videos. These didn’t mind doing the activity on the Music centre’s computers because of the engaging nature of the assignment. Provision (discussed below) should be made in future for students ahead of time – using archived digital files.  Also mention should be made (perhaps through the Weekly Record) regarding use of video resources so that parents can decide if such downloads are within their ISP plans.

These “Videos for homework” issues were seen as requiring a school-wide policy. Thanks to the Music department for forging ahead.

Outcome: Present to the ICT Committeea request for statement / policy about viewing videos & other digital resources.

Possibilities for Digital Resources

  • Make a Thumb drive server (in the library?) so that students can download resources onto their flash drives
  • Develop an iPod lending facility in the Library so that students can access digital resources as if they were boks on closed reserve.
  • It’s also worth looking into such options as eyeTV and ClickView

To Do / follow-up

  • get dongle(s) for DVI – VGA for laptops / projectors
  • sort out log-on – parental controls, access their student server space, Internet access
  • Podcasts – Year 8 – world music assignment research task – students will create an informational presentation via podcast
  • HTML in the new version of WordPress – do we have to ask it to leave ours alone?
