Music at Oxley College
The Music School which opened in September 2005, comprises two specialist music classrooms, five practice rooms, two small ensemble rehearsal spaces, a “rock” room, a senior/technology space, a huge instrumental storage space, staff facilities and, of course, the versatile Orchestra Room.
A bubbling fountain in the centre of an internal courtyard complements the physical layout of the teaching spaces and provides a perfect soundscape to accompany the music that emanates from the school.

All lessons will take place in the Music School. A copy of each teacher’s timetable is on display in the Courtyard of the Music School. Lesson times usually stay the same for two weeks, before occurring half an hour later the next fortnight. This ensures that the student does not miss the same lesson continually. It is the responsibility of the student to record his/her lesson time each week in the Homework Diary (writing it down for the term is recommended) and arrive for lessons promptly. If a student is unable to attend a lesson due to absence or illness, a phone call to the instrumental teacher is most appreciated, or failing that, a message to the office on the day of the absence will be passed on the relevant person.
Instrument and voice lessons have now started for all students in Years 7 to 12. There are waiting lists for guitar and voice lessons with a number of applications from Year 7 students eager to be involved in our music program. Students who have not yet been timetabled will be contacted by the relevant teacher in regard to their lessons.

** Students are expected to be a regular member of one or more of the Oxley ‘Core’ Ensembles in order to join one of the ‘Small’ ensembles.
Instrumental teachers will invoice parents directly for lessons and should be the first point of contact. Further contact can also be made with the Head of Music, Mr Hughes.

Students’ instruments may be left in the Orchestral Locker Room, situated on the left hand side of the courtyard. This room will be locked at the end of each school day.
Booking Practice Rooms
A policy of booking a practice room will operate. These rooms will only be available when not being used for teaching purposes, or for a College ensemble. Students must apply for a room in advance, and must sign in and out each time they use the facility. They are responsible for all equipment in that space and any equipment borrowed must also be signed for. This privilege will be withdrawn if respect is not shown to the room and the equipment. At no time may students other than those signed in be in the practice space.
HSC and senior Music students will always have priority for the available spaces.
