Learning Challenges

Challenge A – “What’s Great About Growing Up in the Highlands?”

Year 10 students assist OPALS as they create a multimedia presentation that champions “Growing up in the Highlands.”  The presentation will use 4-6 hand-drawn illustrations that will be recorded and imported into iMovie where a voice-over and editing will complete the project.

Skills needed: drawing, taking and importing digital photographs, editing video with iMovie

Challenge B – “2020 Vision of Science in the Near Future”

Year 10 students assist OPALS as they research three emerging areas of science and technology (could be with Clipmarks). The OPALS will then have to choose which of the three will have the biggest impact on human life and present their argument in a Powerpoint / Keynote slideshow.

Skills needed: research and information processing, logic & persuasion, Powerpoint or Keynote

Challenge C – “Bridging to the Future”

Year 10 students assist OPALS as they tackle three problem-solving tasks: mathematical calculations on projections of change related to climate change, then design and build a spaghetti bridge that can suspend the greatest weight using the least materials and  leaving the smallest carbon footprint.

Skills needed: maths problem-solving, model construction, innovation

Challenge D – Making Impressive Impressions

Year 10 students assist OPALS to explore the importance of body language and effective public speaking.  These OPALS will chronicle their school team’s progress and present the final projects.

Skills needed: dramatic, performance, interpersonal, organisational
