Genre: Historical
In 1806 William Thornhill, a man of quick temper and deep feelings, is transported from the slums of London to New South Wales for the term of his natural life. With his wife Sal and their children he arrives in a harsh land he canot understand.
But the colony can turn a convict into a free man. Eight years later Thornhill sails up the Hawkesbury to claim a hundred acres for himself.
Aboriginal people already live on that river. And other recent arrivals - Thomas Blackwood, Smasher Sullivan and Mrs Herring - are finding their own ways to respond to them. Thornbill, a man neither better nor worse than most, soon has to make the most difficult choice of his life.
(From Australian Standing Orders Review, No.1 2008)

Supernaturalist
by Eoin Colfer
This is book was chosen by the students at my last school as their most popular science fiction novel. The story is set in a future time where the world is not as we know it. Orphans are used as human guinea pigs to test the effects of life improving products… to escape means to live on the streets with the threat of facing unknown horrors. But what if by some freak accident you find yourself endowed with a special gift… a gift that allows you to see what other people can not… a gift that qualifies you membership to an group that is trying to save the human race.

Links to author Eoin Colfer websites.
- Eoin Colfer- This site has a biography of Eoin Colfer. There is link to another biography site too. The best part of this site is the link to the interview (chat) with the author. It is an extensive interview where the author discusses the characters, language, etc. used in the Artemis Fowl books. This is good information for budding writers.
- Eoin Colfer’s Website- This is Eoin Colfer’s official website. It is quite fancy. All the bells and whistles are included in this site but the content is there too. This site links to a biography about the author. There is also a link to email the author with questions. Lots of other links to his books, his tours, etc. are included in this site. You could spend a lot of time on this site and its links.
- Elf and Happiness- An article written about Eoin Colfer and his writings and movies. This site contains a lot of information not usually found in biographies of authors. It discusses his endeavor to get his novels made into movies. Interesting information that is not used as advertising.
- Eoin Colfer - This site is a short interview with the author about one of his novels. It is there to encourage students to read for World Book Day Festival in Europe.
- Eoin Colfer Page - First of all, I must tell you that the background color of this page drives me crazy! That being said, there is almost too much information here. If you are a fan of Artemis Fowl’s, this is a great site. You can learn about the characters, places, weapons, etc. used in the series. There is also some information about the author. Students will love this site.
- Eoin Colfer - This page just has links to a biography, conventions and appearances by the author, etc. You may be able to find information here that you can’t find on the other sites.

New DVDs
We have recently purchased the following DVDs for general viewing. They can be borrowed for one night, or over the weekend.
Footy Legends
This is an Australian film starring Anh Do and Claudia Karvan. It tells the story of an out-of-work Vietnamese Australian who has custody of his 10-year-old sister. When welfare authorities threaten to take his sister from him, he reunites his old high school football team, a disparate group of unfit ‘blokes’ with low self-esteem. They set out to win a competition which could change their lives.
As it is in heaven
This is a Swedish film, subtitled, which describes the power of music and song. An internationally renowned conductor returns to his village in rural Sweden, where he is talked into managing the local church choir. The transformation which overtakes many lives is moving and uplifting.
Himalaya
An outstanding film about the culture of Tibet and its clash with a more modern approach to life in the Himalaya mountains. It depicts the journey of the villagers to the market where they must deliver the salt which is their bartering product. It is filmed against the backdrop of the magnificent Himalayas.
Each of these filmes would be a suitable resource for the Year 11 Journey Area of Study.

Good Reading magazine is an excellent source of recommended reading. It contains book reviews, reading group recommendations, author interviews and “book bites” - exerpts which give you a feeling for the character and style of a novel to help you decide whether you would enjoy it.
Good Reading magazine is published monthly and is used by David Wright Library staff as a selection aid when deciding what books to purchase for the collection.
Australian Gourmet Traveller
A new subscription to this periodical commenced in July, 2007 and is recommended for everyone interested in food and travel.

From now on, whenever a student logs onto any computer in the school, the Library Catalogue icon will appear on the desk-top, enabling you to access the Catalogue.
There will still be four computers which are dedicated to the Catalogue. They are located in the far south-western corner of the Library.
The Catalogue icon is a small red letter “i” (for Inquiry) on a white circular back-ground.
