Girls Not in Primary School

This map shows the areas of the world where girls do not attend primary school.  You can see from the skinny size of North and South America that girls in these countries do attend primary school. In India and much of the African  countries girls do not have the opportunity to go to school.  I think this is because they are needed at home and that maybe these cultures don’t see woman as working away from the home or doing anything besides getting married and having their own families.

Welcome!

This site has been set up to see what you think about your role in the world.  Specifically, we’d like to see how you would answer this question:

What does it mean to be a good global citizen, especially during challenging times?

To start, let’s see what wisdom you can bring to the topic by looking from a geographer’s perspective.  In this case, you can use a range of maps that show global inequality through quality of life indicators.

Next, the most significant effort to bring more balance to global inequalities are the MDG – the Milennium Development Goals.  You probably know something about these already, but the MDGs page on this site gathers both background information on the MDGs as well as some interactive maps to show how different countries are doing at achieving the goals.

Finally, we’d like to get your ideas on how best to Take Action. This is an activity you can do during school in the computer lab or from home.
