Shaun Tan’s “The Lost Thing”
Ms. Hall has asked for images to be placed on the Year 9 English blog for students reading Shaun Tan’s The Lost Thing. The images highlight some of the sources for Tan’s inspiration.
Taken from the Web site, Mirror of the World, is the following quotation:
This picture book concerns a huge machine-like thing found on a beach by a young child. Thematically, author Shaun Tan explores notions of difference and belonging, conformity and creativity, humanity and mechanisation.
Artistically, he uses the collage effect of pasting text and painting over a background of pages from physics and engineering textbooks.
His artwork acknowledges the influence of Jeffrey Smart, Edward Hopper and John Brack, resulting in a masterly picture book to be appreciated on many levels.
You can flip through the pages of the book online.
