21st August 2006

Summary - August 11 & 15

Mathematics - Ms. Culey

After more discussions with Ms. Culey, it was decided to pull back and start more simply. The following page was created to engage students as they master finding the average speed of a range of animals. Extension links allow students to find the average speeds for fast cars, jets and other animals. This is called the How Fast is That? Hotlist.

Geography - Mr. Freeman

Mr. Freeman emailed Tom a series of ideas for integrating technology and authentic tasks across the geography, history, business and commerce courses from year 9 – 12. A long discussion and notes began a process that will begin this year and carry on in 2007. Watch this space!

History – Mr. Craig

Mr. Craig brought an overview to a unit of work on Australian Migration that is part of the Year 10 School Certificate requirement. We spoke and brainstormed around balancing the need to provide concrete assessments of knowledge while also encouraging student-initiated explorations. This led to the drafting of a Year 10 Migration WebQuest.

History - Whole School

After discussions with Mr. Craig and Mr. Armstrong, a need was identified for an agreed upon process that students could use when engaging in project-based learning. This would help students as well as prompt them to really dig into a topic and be lured in plagiarism or sloppy thinking. A draft was presented.
