CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY / CANBERRA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
IT PATHWAY

A new pathway to a successful Information Technology graduate degree and career has been laid in Canberra following the signing of a Pathways Program Agreement between the Canberra Institute of Technology and Charles Sturt University.

The new agreement will allow students that complete CIT’s Diploma of Information Technology (Networking) plus four Cisco Certificate Network Associate modules (also available at CIT) to have their study credited against the first two years of CSU’s Bachelor of Information Technology. Students can then enrol in the third year of the CSU course with the classes conducted at CIT’s Reid Campus, removing the need to study at CSU’s regional campuses. Upon completion of the third year students will graduate with their degree from CSU.

The CIT/CSU agreement eliminates the need for CIT students to negotiate with a university to seek credit for their undergraduate studies, and will prove to be a great financial incentive for students who live in the Canberra area. By being able to study for an IT Networking degree in the heart of Canberra, students can take advantage of remaining at home without the expense of relocating to another city.

Anne Cameron, the Director of CIT’s Centre for Information and Communication Technology, said the new agreement was a win for everyone involved in this opportunity. “For the student, it represents a pathway to University that can be taken gradually with significant financial, travel and time-saving benefits”, she said. “Students also benefit from receiving a Diploma, a vendor certification and a degree in IT as they progress through their education.”

“For CIT and CSU it enhances our already strong relationship by providing another seamless link between the two institutions at a time when people are placing great emphasis on the need for higher education in financially-difficult times.”

UNIVERSITY ADMISSION
BONUS POINTS

Universities have a number of schemes that allow the allocation of bonus points which may mean that applicants can receive an offer to a course even though they have an ATAR below the published cut-off.

Examples include students with strong performance in HSC subjects, students who live or attend school in an area defined by the university and students who have applied for consideration through Educational Access Schemes.

Remember that if universities allocate bonus points it does not change a student’s ATAR, it changes a student’s selection rank.

For most Year 12 students their selection rank is their ATAR. However, if a student is allocated bonus points, then their selection rank = their ATAR + bonus points.

As the bonus points schemes for each university, and often for each course at the same university, are different, then the selection rank can be different for each course listed in the student’s course preferences.

Consult the 2009 UAC Guide (or interstate equivalent) for details of each university’s bonus points scheme or contact the Admissions Office at your preferred university.

Follow the link for info on special admission schemes at UAC participating institutions.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND (UNE)
EARLY ENTRY SCHEME

The UNExtra Early Entry scheme enables school leavers to receive an offer from UNE in early December on the recommendation of their school Principal, rather than on the basis of the ATAR. The Principal’s recommendation is based on an assessment of the student’s ability to succeed at university study.

There are lots of great reasons to apply for early entry, such as:

•     wanting to know early that you have a UNE place to relieve the pressure of waiting for results or so you can plan your big move
•     you have studied subjects that won’t get you an ATAR (formerly UAI) or OP, but you still want to go to UNE
•     extra security to make sure you get in to the course of your choice

•     The best part about UNExtra Early Entry is that if you are successful, and do not do as well as expected in your Year 12 exams, you may still have a place at UNE.

UNExtra Early Entry is available for most UNE degrees, to:

•     current Year 12 students
•     full-time students preparing to sit for the full NSW HSC in TAFE colleges in NSW and the ACT
•     full-time TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate students.

As a UNExtra Early Entry applicant you must also lodge an application with UAC or QTAC. If your UNExtra Early Entry application is successful for one or more courses of your choice, and if you have one of those courses as a first preference in the Early Round you will receive an offer of a place at UNE in early December – even before you know your ATAR or OP.

Early entry is only available if you are planning to study full-time on-campus in Armidale.

APPLICATIONS CLOSE 25 SEPTEMBER 2009.

Follow the link for further info AND an Application Form OR contact your Careers Advisor.

UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA (UC)
PRINCIPAL’S RECOMMENDATION SCHEME

The Principal’s Recommendation Scheme is an early entry initiative. This scheme provides current year 12 school or college students with an opportunity to secure an offer to the University during the UAC Early Round in December.

The University of Canberra recognises that an ATAR is not the best measure of a student’s ability or determination to succeed at University. If a school or college Principal recognises that a student has the aptitude to go on to higher education, they can recommend that student to the University for consideration.

115 ACT students accepted an offer to the University through this initiative in December 2008 and commenced their studies in Semester 1 2009. The University is now offering the Principal’s Recommendation Scheme to schools in NSW and across Australia. Last year applications were capped to 10 students per school, however this cap has been lifted for 2009.

How to apply
Applications will be assessed on the strength of supporting information provided by the student’s school, college or TAFE. An ATAR result is not required for entry via this initiative.

To apply students must indicate their University of Canberra course preferences on their UAC application. On-time UAC applications close on 30 September 2009.

The recommendation form, signed by the student and the school, college or TAFE Principal must be returned to the University of Canberra Admissions Office by this 30 September 2009.

FLEXIBLE ENTRY

This scheme is intended for current HSC applicants whose UAI may fall up to five points below the normal cut-off for entry into certain courses. Applicants who are approved for admission under this scheme must have demonstrated their aptitude for the course of their choice.

Those faculties which offer admission into their courses under this scheme prescribe certain ways in which applicants can demonstrate this aptitude, such as performance in relevant HSC subjects, participation in Science Olympiads, or through a written submission.

The criteria for consideration vary between faculties and courses, and not all courses offer flexible entry. UAC applicants may also be required to make an additional application direct to the faculty to be considered for certain courses, but may be considered automatically for other courses.

CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY-PREP EARLY ENTRY SCHEME

What is PREP?
PREP stands for Principal’s Report Entry Program and is designed to attract academically talented students from the High Schools in non-metropolitan areas in NSW, ACT and Victoria.

To be eligible for nomination under the Program a Year 12 student should be identified by their School Principal as a consistent achiever with the potential to succeed in University studies. Selection is competitive and is based on the School Principal’s assessment of the student’s performance and potential to succeed at full time on campus study.

To be guaranteed an offer under PREP, a student must include that course as a preference on their UAC application form and to receive an Early Round offer that preference must be the highest preference the student has nominated.

Why does CSU offer PREP?
CSU is committed to helping students in our non-metropolitan communities gain access to higher education. A successful PREP application guarantees selected students an offer to their preferred course at CSU prior to the mainstream selection system, which is based on the Universities Admissions Index (UAI) or ENTER. This means you could be made an offer before your HSC results are known.

AFRICAN CONSERVATION EXPERIENCE

Mark Harris has sent us information on the African Conservation Experience, which started 10 years ago, and is an organisation for voluntary wildlife conservation placements in Southern Africa. Placements can be from 2 weeks to 12 weeks in length and projects include wildlife veterinary work, animal behaviour research, animal rehabilitation, game reserve management and community work. Students cover their own costs of flights, food, transport and accommodation, plus an amount that goes to fund the project. The whole placement for participants is organised and participants are given advice on fundraising and getting sponsorship. You can see our website here: www.ConservationAfrica.net
