When you go to the doctor you can be sure the work of biomedical scientists is behind the diagnosis and cure for the condition that is bothering you. Thanks to the discoveries of early biomedical scientists such as French chemist and bacteriologist, Louis Pasteur, antibiotics and vaccines help defend human beings against microbes that cause infectious diseases. Since Pasteur’s investigations in the 19th century, biomedical scientists have made phenomenal advances all over the world. Their research ranges across many interrelated areas, applications of which may help people with fertility problems or inherited disorders, find treatments for diseases such as cancer, and enable the matching of blood types and DNA when crimes occur.
Biomedical science is any area of study that investigates the relationship between humans, health and disease. It is a wide-reaching area of scientific research that includes the study of human genetics, immunology, biological and medicinal chemistry, physiology and environmental health.
Biomedical science may be viewed as three interrelated areas of specialisation – human genetics, molecular pathology and molecular pharmacology, and medicinal chemistry.
Human Genetics is the scientific study of genes and heredity. Geneticists study what genes are, how they are duplicated and transferred, and how they change through selection during evolution.
Molecular Pathology focuses on the relationship between health and disease. Molecular pathologists work in laboratories where they investigate the biochemical and biophysical changes that happen in cells when people become ill. They also study the effects of diseases on the overall system of the human body.
Molecular Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry studies all aspects of chemistry in relation to our bodies, including modern chemical methods for the synthesis of drugs and how they are used to treat disease. Pharmacologists play a major role in human health and society. They are responsible for the discovery of hundreds of chemicals used in the treatment of disease and the relief of human and animal suffering.
