Aerospace Careers

AEROSPACE CAREERS

Like to get your hands dirty? Imagine maintaining and repairing any of the 6 million parts that make up a 747 Jumbo. With over 10,000 aircraft in Australia alone, the Aerospace Industry needs dedicated, highly skilled people to maintain this vast fleet. Alternatively, you might like to check in passengers, or become a pilot!

Modern aircraft are highly complex structures and are made up of thousands of different components and systems, which all need to be both
manufactured and maintained to stringent safety standards.

This is a fascinating and fulfilling area for people who like aircraft, have a strong
attention to detail, and a love of working accurately to solve complex problems. You
could work in aero structure components, engineering and avionics systems, light
aircraft, satellite components, telecommunications, remote sensing or navigation
equipment.

There are great opportunities for skilled people to work in Aeronautical
Engineering, Structural Maintenance, Mechanical Maintenance and Avionics.

Those people who undertake the extra training to become Licensed Aircraft
Maintenance Engineers, or LAMEs, are particularly in demand.

Aeronautical Engineers

Aeronautical Engineers work with piston-engined aircraft, jets and turbo-props,
helicopters, gliders, missiles, launch vehicles and spacecraft. They design and help
construct aircraft prototypes, aerospace vehicles, propulsion systems, satellites and
control and guidance systems. Aerospace Engineers are responsible for maintenance
planning and have a thorough knowledge of electrical, electronic and computer systems.

Avionics

Do you like aircraft and electronics? Then maybe you would enjoy maintaining aircraft instruments, radio communications and navigation systems. Where the
structure is the ‘body’ of an aircraft, the avionics are its ‘brain and nerves’. Avionics
also includes generators and power distribution, power protection circuitry, auto
pilot and integrated flight systems.

Structural Maintenance

Aircraft may be filled with sophisticated machinery and electronics, but they would
not fly without wings, tail, control surfaces and a fuselage. Because of the high
pressures and forces applied to aircraft, their structures need to be maintained by
specialists.

Mechanical Maintenance

Do you like the challenge of solving complex problems? Do you have a good brain for
analysis and faultfinding? Do you like being around aircraft? The Mechanical
Maintenance team is responsible for the overhaul, repair, modification and testing
of airframe and engine components.
