Acting

Says Steve….

I secretly wanted to be an actor or an astronaut. After a lot of years doing different things, I finally fulfilled my dream of becoming an actor. But I did a lot of things in between time. I had a bit of a misspent youth!

I was part of a military family so we moved around a lot. I was part of three different education systems. I did try in my HSC but I didn’t do that well. I don’t think that means you’re not an intelligent person.”

I worked on a carrot farm for about four hours after school. I did labouring and other things to make a living. I knew I wanted to work in TV or any acting. I went into radio announcing first of all after hearing an ad for radio school. I did a six month radio announcing course and got a job in the country on 3CV Bendigo doing the midnight to dawn shift.

I spent a lot of time in radio – Canberra KIX 106FM, Today FM, Sky Radio and 2UE. I worked on a whole stack of country stations. I found it a repetitive job after a while. The money kept me in and there was a certain amount of infamy attached to it. I won a number of radio awards but I really wanted to pursue acting. It was only after I started doing drop-in courses at The Actors Centre in Surry Hills that I started to fulfil my dream.

I acted in an episode of Water Rats and I was doing some commercial work. But it all came together after three years of intensive studying at university. I finally have a great agent and am getting regular work.

I do quite a bit of TV and voiceover work. I’ve acted in a couple of episodes of All Saints and White Collar Blue. I was on a nine-day shoot for Young Lions and I recently finished work on a telemovie. I still do some commercials and a bit of voiceover work. My stage work has included roles in The Removalist, Don’s Party, Othello, Comedy of Errors, Trumpets and Drums and The Castle.

Best Bit – When it’s good it’s fantastic. You get to do what you love and you get paid for it.

Worst Bit – When you aren’t working, it can be very difficult. There’s a lot of down time and it can be tough mentally.

The Future – I’d like a good role in a good Aussie film. I‘d like to make a living out of acting but not have it rule me. I’ve got a production company with some other actors which I would like to build up and do work which we want to do.
