Careers at Oxley

A Career is more than one’s job or occupation title- it is a holistic definition of all the dimensions of our lives that fulfill us. It is the culmination of years of development influenced by family, friends, peers, school education, and demographic factors. Along the way, we learn our own individual coping mechanisms and life skills enabling us to deal with varying situations and occasions in life. An incident in life can be the initiation for a career direction- a family loss can lead to an interest in psychology; being ill during childhood can point someone in the direction of health services; a motivational teacher can encourage a student to follow an educational path. What was your stimulus to be where you are today? These occurrences in life, with a genetic influence, will be the precursors for current students’ career paths. As the Careers Counsellor I am here to help the students identify their interest areas, discuss varying occupations and the paths available. No career choice is impossible but may require modification to accommodate academic results, availability of courses and job viability.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND (UNE) EARLY ENTRY SCHEME 2010

The UNExtra Early Entry scheme enables school leavers to receive an offer from UNE in early December on the recommendation of their school Principal, rather than on the basis of the ATAR. The Principal’s recommendation is based on an assessment of the student’s ability to succeed at university study.

There are lots of great reasons to apply for early entry, such as:

•     wanting to know early that you have a UNE place to relieve the pressure of waiting for results or so you can plan your big move
•     you have studied subjects that won’t get you an ATAR (formerly UAI) or OP, but you still want to go to UNE
•     extra security to make sure you get in to the course of your choice
•     The best part about UNExtra Early Entry is that if you are successful, and do not do as well as expected in your Year 12 exams, you may still have a place at UNE.

UNExtra Early Entry is available for most UNE degrees, to:

•     current Year 12 students
•     full-time students preparing to sit for the full NSW HSC in TAFE colleges in NSW and the ACT
•     full-time TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate students.

As a UNExtra Early Entry applicant you must also lodge an application with UAC or QTAC. If your UNExtra Early Entry application is successful for one or more courses of your choice, and if you have one of those courses as a first preference in the Early Round you will receive an offer of a place at UNE in early December – even before you know your ATAR or OP.

Early entry is only available if you are planning to study full-time on-campus in Armidale.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND (UNE) SCHOLARSHIPS

Every year UNE awards undergraduate scholarships worth a total of more than $3 million. Among them are many scholarships designed to enable students from regional and remote areas to live and study at the University.

These include UNE Country Scholarships (worth $5,000 a year), available to students planning to enrol in any undergraduate program, and Sponsored UNE Country Scholarships and Discipline Scholarships, available to students from specified country areas and/or planning to enrol in specified degree programs. These programs include courses in Agriculture and Rural Science, Natural Resources, Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, and Nursing.

There is also a range of Equity Scholarships available to students from financially disadvantaged or Indigenous backgrounds. Many of these, too, are for people from regional and remote areas, and several of them are for people from specified regions and/or planning specified courses of study – including courses in Nursing, Teaching, Natural Resources, and Engineering Technology.

While many UNE scholarships are designed to help students with their accommodation expenses while living in the University’s residential colleges, there are also Residential Scholarships for students at particular colleges. The award of these scholarships is based on a range of criteria, including financial disadvantage, coming from a regional or remote area, and academic and sporting excellence. UNE’s residential system provides students with a unique combination of pastoral care, academic support, social activities and opportunities for personal growth while living on campus.

There is also a range of sporting scholarships offered by Sport UNE, one of the finest sports facilities at any Australian university.

MOST SCHOOL LEAVER SCHOLARSHIPS CLOSE AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER.

AUSTRALIAN COLLEGE OF RURAL & REMOTE MEDICINE (ACRRM) THE JOHN FLYNN PLACEMENT PROGRAM

(JFPP) is an important part of the Australian Government’s strategy to attract more doctors to rural and remote areas to address areas of workforce shortage & improve the quality of healthcare for local communities. At a time when the age of farmers is increasing and rural communities are shrinking, maintaining the skill base within the agricultural industry is becoming increasingly important. This program is designed to match farmers with young Australians considering or participating in a full, part-time or school-based Australian Apprenticeship. It has long been recognized that the success of rural industries are a vital part of a growing Australian economy. However formal qualifications recognizing the range and depth of knowledge required to be successful in the farming industry are relatively new. This program is designed to give the next generation of Australian farmers, practical farming experience, a recognized qualification and the ability to turn a job into a career. As an apprentice, you would combine practical work on a farm with structured on and off the job technical training and study as part of your apprenticeship. You’ll gain a comprehensive set of skills across a range of farming disciplines: •     tractor driving •     crop planting •     machinery operations •     farm operations •     plant nutrition and care •     soil characteristics •     workplace health and safety After successfully completing your Level II Certificate in Production Horticulture you will also receive a $1,000 bonus payment paid by Sunbeam. What a great way to kick start your career! If you’re considering or currently participating in a full, part-time or school-based Australian Apprenticeship in Production Horticulture you may be eligible to become part of the Sunbeam Future Farmers program. DEPT EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT & WORKPLACE RELATIONS (DEEWR)-YOUTH ALLOWANCE (P/R 16 March 2010)

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, welcomed the agreement of the Opposition to secure the passage of the Youth Allowance bill in the Senate which will see more than 150 000 students across Australia start to receive new scholarships from April 1. More than 100 000 students will be better off under the changes by receiving more Youth Allowance for the first time. New parental income test arrangements will come into force from July 1. The changes will make a real difference for families trying to send their kids to university and will help ease the cost of living pressures that university can place on students and their families. Students who live away from major cities and regional centres who have to move will be eligible under the existing independence test. This test will be restricted to those who leave home to study, whose parents earn less than $150 000 a year and who live in “Very Remote”, “Remote” or “Outer Regional” areas as defined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. In keeping with the Government’s commitment to responsible economic management, the amendments will be paid for by a reduction in annual start-up scholarships to $2 128 once the scheme is fully up and running. This will keep the changes cost neutral. Key elements of the changes include: •     All students who receive Youth Allowance will receive a $2 128 start up scholarship every year, indexed for inflation. ($1 300 in 2010) •     Students who live in very remote, remote and outer regional areas, who have to move away from home to study and whose parents earn less than $150 000 a year will be eligible for the existing independence test criteria. •     The parental income test will be raised so that families with two children studying away from home can earn more than $140 000 before their allowance is cut completely. •     Students who choose to move to study may be eligible for an additional relocation scholarship, worth $4 000, in the first year of study and $1 000 each subsequent year. •     From 1 July 2012, students will be able to earn $400 a fortnight (up from $236) without having their payments reduced. •     The age of independence will reduce progressively from 25 years to 22 years by 2012, which will see an estimated 7 600 new recipients of the independent rate of allowance. Making the transition from tertiary study to the workforce requires a good understanding of the personal and professional skills you have to offer an employer and the ability to market these skills to your best advantage. Whether or not your job demands a foreign language skill, possession of it can give you that ‘something extra’ that employers look for in a competitive market. Language graduates generally have two career options: •     Jobs in languages, where languages are central to the job ie Translator, Interpreter or Languages teacher or •     Jobs with languages, where languages add value to other work skills Owing to globalisation, organisations increasingly need personnel with technical or professional skills, plus another language, to enhance their effectiveness in an overseas environment. It can broaden the field of study and make it possible to access material published in languages other than English. This is particularly important in the science and technology disciplines, and a big advantage in the study of music, art history, history and politics. SOME FACTS •     on average, people who use languages in their job earn 8% more than their colleagues •     although English is currently the dominant language, it’s predicted that Asian languages and Spanish will increasingly gain ground over coming years •     more books are published in German than in any other language except English. German is the most used language on the Internet after English. •     the business languages most in demand in the European Union are English, German, French, Spanish and Italian, followed by Dutch •     in the world context there is an increasing demand for Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Japanese and Arabic •     as cultural identity grows stronger, media groups need linguists for subtitles and dubbing. •     there is a steady demand for teachers of English, particularly in European and Asian countries.
