Year 7 students were greeted with many changes at Oxley College on the first day of class. Besides meeting new classmates from many schools, students entered a very different classroom. Over the summer the grounds crew, staff and contractors had been very busy creating an open learning space where three classrooms had been before.
To support this approach a core team of teachers has had been timetabled into this new learning space (presently referred to as “The Loft” as it sits above on the second floor of the De LaSalle building). The following subjects and staff are can work in the Loft as whole-course teams:
Finally, Year 7 is one of the two year levels piloting “BYOD” where students Bring Your Own Device. A quick survey of students revealed they and families appreciate being able to choose their own:

A Special Year 7 Web site has been set up to support students as they get familiar with using the devices in the classroom.
We encourage students to take advantage of the online tutorials found on the Digital Learning site and the Oxley “CompuTech Team” whose members are available to help students during lunches in the Library.
Sometimes you might run into a Web site using Flash resources that won’t play on an iPad. This is a well-known issue. If you want to play the Flash content, you will need to view the site through a browser other than Safari. There are several free apps, but the one that get’s the highest reviews is the Photon “Flash Video Player & Private Web Browser for iPad”. Currently the app costs $5.49 in Australia.
Photon has a tutorial to help you. Basically, you will use the “gear” icon at school to make sure the app is using the right port at Oxley College. Then, use Photon any time you go to a flash site like echalk.co.uk and click on the “thunderbolt” icon.
Please use the comments link for this post if you find another free browser that you find works just as well!
Whether you are new to Oxley College this year or a returning member of the community, “Welcome!” to what will be an exciting year.
Year 7 students are among the student groups who will have the most new experiences. Most of their classes will be held in a new space in what used to be Rooms 10 – 13. We now call this the Loft. Also, much of the learning for them will be supported by an online environment and their own digital devices. We have a special survey for Year 7 Students that will help us work with them in the BYOD manner. Please complete this short survey if you are a Year 7 student.

As part of the transition to Year 12, we have organised a one-day incursion to explore how you will use the power of Digital Learning.
There are three main parts:
1. Getting to know yourself
2. Exploring the Digital Landscape
3. Choosing your path.
